This nine-minute short, made for the 48 Hour Film Project, was my first on-camera piece as a producer & director. My prior experience was for theatre, where I produced four shows, assisted in the production of another and curated a play reading series. For the 48 hour piece, I combined the talents of the theatre and digital media communities. Teams participating in the 48HFP had to have their entries written, shot and edited within 48 hours to qualify for "Best Of". To keep us honest, the organizers had each team draw a genre from a hat, and all of the teams had to incorporate a common prop, character and line of dialogue in their respective movies. In this case, our genre was Sci-Fi, and the designated prop, character and line were, respectively, a vinyl record, a bouncer named Hugh Simon and "I was lied to and very much deceived." In The Dark received its premier at the Roxie Theatre in San Francisco, in October of 2003. Due to various logistical difficulties, our entry came in half an hour late, however we had good deal of fun making it, learned quite a lot from the experience and managed to pull off a Twighlight Zone-type story in a weekend without screaming at one another. And this from a team where many of whom hadn't worked together before. |
